HIDE&SHRIEK

YOU'RE ALREADY DEAD

One seeker. A handful of hiders. A derelict asylum that hears every footstep you take.

COMING SOON Free · Windows, macOS, Linux WHAT IS THIS?

THE WARD

The lights in this place gave up a long time ago. What's left is a floorplan you have to learn in the dark — wards, a morgue, surgery, the boiler room, a chapel nobody finished clearing out — strung together by corridors, dead ends and chokepoints.

Hiders get a head start and somewhere to disappear: the space under a bed, the underside of a surgery table, the dark behind a stack of crates. Then the seeker is let in, and the only thing either side really has is information. Where that sound came from. Which door was open a minute ago. Whether the thing sweeping its torch across the corridor has actually seen you or is about to walk past.

HOW IT PLAYS

  • Noise is the whole game

Sprinting carries. Walking carries less. Crouching buys you silence at the price of speed — and creaking floorboards will sell you out to anyone standing still enough to listen.

  • Vision you can read

The seeker sees in a cone, not a bubble. Hiders survive by learning its edges, keeping walls between the two of you, and moving on the beat the seeker looks away.

  • Somewhere to disappear

Under the beds, beneath the tables, behind the crates. Getting in is the easy part. Deciding when to leave — with a torch sweeping past the gap — is the part that gets people caught.

  • Doors, dark and dread

Doors block movement and line of sight, and opening one is loud. Static lights gutter and flicker. Nothing about the building is on your side.

  • Turn on your friends

Coins, curses and a shop that stocks one of everything. Buy an item and you've taken it off whoever picks after you — then lay an oil slick outside their hiding spot and wait for the bang. The betrayal, in detail →

  • Windows, macOS, Linux

Full gamepad support and a native Linux build — which is what gets it onto a Steam Deck, as a non-Steam shortcut in Gaming Mode. Every build updates itself in place the next time you launch it.

  • Coming Soon: Multiplayer

Online rooms with join codes, so the handful of hiders are people you know rather than bots. Until then it's you against the building.

CURSES, COINS & BETRAYAL

In the works — the part of the game that ruins friendships.

Rounds stop being separate. Survive one and you get paid, and the payout is bigger the fewer hiders are left standing at the end — surviving alone pays best of all. That single rule is what turns the other hiders from company into competition.

So you spend the coins on them. A can of oil laid outside somebody's hiding spot: they come out, they slip, they hit the floor loud and stay down while a torch swings round to find out what that was. You were three rooms away. You were nowhere near it.

The shop re-rolls between rounds and stocks exactly one of each item, and players pick in order of coins held, richest first. Everything you buy is something you took off the person behind you — and passing banks your money for first pick next time.

Then the seeker gets their turn. At the end of every round they're dealt a small hand of curses and hand one of them to one hider of their choosing, which in practice means whoever wound them up most. Items last a few rounds, stack three deep, and visibly change your character, so everyone can see exactly what you've been made to wear. Dying strips the lot — which makes getting caught the only way out of a bad one.

  • Squeaky Clown Shoes

    Curse

Every gait gets louder. Even crouching squeaks.

  • Glow-in-the-Dark Pyjamas

    Curse

The seeker picks you out at half again their normal range.

  • Padded Slippers

    Blessing

Walking and sprinting carry far less far.

  • Lucky Rabbit's Foot

    Blessing

A little more speed, for the run you shouldn't have made.

  • Can of Oil

    Sabotage

Lay a slick. Whoever walks it goes down hard, and loudly.

Items are content files, not code — so this list is the start of it, not the shape of it.

    COMING SOON

One AppImage. It's also the Deck build — add it to Steam as a non-Steam game and it updates itself on launch.

Builds, checksums and changelogs will land on the releases page as they're cut.

PUTTING IT ON A STEAM DECK

Nothing Deck-specific to build — it's the Linux build, so it's four steps when it lands.

  1. In Desktop Mode, grab the AppImage and drop it in ~/Games/HideAndShriek/.
  2. Mark it executable: chmod +x ~/Games/HideAndShriek/HideAndShriek.AppImage.
  3. In Steam, Add a Non-Steam Game → browse to the AppImage.
  4. Back to Gaming Mode and launch it. Every release after that one arrives on its own.
